2009 Holiday Shopping Guide: Apparel!

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Today’s edition of the Shopping Guide focuses on cephalopod-themed clothing, but first, here’s our regularly scheduled installment of T-shirt Tuesday

Sir Octopus

Sir Octopus

Brand new from Sir Critter (who previously brought us Sir Squid), is this dapper fellow. He’s all dressed up and ready for your office Christmas party!

Shirts start at $15.99, are available in a rainbow of color combinations, and did I mention the octopus with a moustache wearing a bow tie and flourishing a top hat? Also, there’s just two days left of their big Cyber Monday sale! All orders over $40 are 25% off.

Buy it now from SirCritter.com

Threadless®

Art Is My Weapon and Loch Ness Imposter are back in stock!

Both are currently on sale for $12 each (all sizes and styles).

As we know, Threadless designs sell out fast, particularly when they’re on sale, so act fast!

Squidfire.com

I’ve already featured several different Squidfire designs, but I’ve barely scratched the surface of their vast selection of cephalopod shirts. They are all currently on sale (and all in stock, as far as I can tell), so any of them would be appropriate for this list. For example, here’s the SquidFire Emblem polo. It normally costs $32, but it’s temporarily reduced in price to $27. Buy it now from Squidfire.com.

The Squidfire emblem is also available on regular T-shirts (both men’s and women’s), long-sleeved thermal shirts (men’s and women’s), and hoodies.

Diesel Sweeties is a webcomic by R. Stevens about robots, music, and geek love. Looking for clever, ironic, and/or pixilated gift ideas? Then check out the Diesel Sweeties Store! These women’s knee socks—produced in cahoots with Sock It To Me of Portland, OR—feature an entire school of adorable cyclopian squid and are only $6.99 a pair!

Etsy.com

The Etsy community seems to be a nigh-unlimited source of hand-made cephalopod products, but for the purposes of rounding out tonight’s list, I’m going to narrow things down to neck ties only. Let’s begin with a rather familiar looking design

(Click the images to visit the each seller’s Etsy shop.)

T-shirt Tuesday: “Octo Attack!” from DesignByHümans

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
design by nicebleed

design by nicebleed

It is not entirely clear to me what’s going on here. Is this octopus being attacked, or is it doing that attacking…with javelins? Maybe the octopus is actually trying to slash its way out of the shirt? It’s hard to say, but one thing I know for sure is that it is very dynamic and exciting!

This shirt is $20 USD and appears to be currently in stock in all men’s and womens’s sizes.

T-shirt Tuesday: “Cthulhu” by Teach The Controversy

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

"Because we know that in his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."

I’m still in an eldritch sort of mood after yesterday’s post about Lil’ Cthulhu, so for today’s T-shirt Tuesday here is another cuddly take on the sleepiest Elder God.

Teach The Controversy is a division of Amorphia Apparel (just like the previously featured Sir Critter). Riffing off of the Discovery Institute’s campaign to promote Intelligent Design, Teach The Controversy has a T-shirt for just about any crackpot theory you can think of—Atlantis, Reptoids, Time Cube, Young Earth, 2012, and much more!

Like all Amorphia shirts, “Cthulhu” is available in a variety of styles and color combinations. The basic tee is $15.99, and for a little bit more you can get it as an American Apparel shirt, as well as a hoodie or a messenger bag.

T-shirt Tuesday: “Geisha Tentacles” by Gama-Go

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

I couldn’t find anything Action Figure-themed for this week’s T-shirt Tuesday, so I figured I should post the final squid shirt from the current Gama-Go season. “Geisha Tentacles” is exactly what it sound like, a Japanese geisha “hanging out” with some squid tentacles. I’m sure they are just very good friends.

This shirt is $28 and is available in Olive and Light Blue.

T-shirt Tuesday: “Squid Schooner” by Gama-Go

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Here’s another shirt from Gama-Go, this one depicting the classic “squid attacks sailing ship” motif. The last Gama-Go shirt I mentioned here, Sutro Squid, has already been discontinued, so who knows how long this one will be around! Also, like “Sutro,” this shirt is also being modeled by “Headband Guy.” Different shirt…SAME headband!

The shirt is $28 and available in both Navy and Grass.

Halloween Week/T-shirt Tuesday: “Most Nights” by The Cotton Factory

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

It’s an octopus with a human skull for a body! I’m not sure what else needs to be (or can be) said.

Available as men’s, women’s, and kid’s tees in various shades of green ($15.99-$18.99).

T-shirt Tuesday: “Art Is My Weapon” from Threadless®

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
design by Matheus Lopes and Emerson Rauth

design by Matheus Lopes and Emerson Rauth

Continuing the “octopus as artist” theme from yesterday’s post, this shirt is part of the Threadless Halloween Sale, and it’s going fast!

Buy on Threadless…just $10 while supplies last!

UPDATE: While the shirt is still in stock in a few sizes at this time, the Halloween Sale is already over, and the price is back up to $20.

T-shirt Tuesday: “Sutro Squid” by Gama-Go

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

At some point after posting about my first Gama-Go squid shirt, I realized that I need to blog about their current selection before they are discontinued!

Here we have San Francisco’s Sutro Tower being attached by enormous tentacles…or is it being lovingly caressed? With a squid is there any way to tell the difference?

The shirt is $28 and available in both olive and black.

Buy it from Gama-Go (while you still can!)

T-shirt Tuesday: “Ocean R.E.M.” from Shirt.Woot!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Shirt.Woot.com offers an new original t-shirt every day. And for the low low price of just $10! The catch is that each design is only available for that one day (although it seems that some “classic” designs have recently been re-offered for $15). The shirts are produced in limited quantities, and they sell out fast! All shirts are American Apparel, and they are long and close-fitting. I’ve only just recently lost enough weight to wear this one, and you can tell from this photo that it’s been folded up in the bottom of my dresser for a year and a half!

“Ocean R.E.M.” was designed by Tgentry and was available on February 2, 2008. I didn’t know it then, of course, but Kid Indie Squid Kid would be born a year later on that exact day. Does it depict a sleeping child dreaming of an octopus…or is is the octopus that dreams of a child?

Don’t forget! There’s only two shopping days left until International Cephalopod Appreciation Day!

T-shirt Tuesday: “I Heart My Giant Squid” by Gama-Go

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

In my video post from earlier today I was wearing what I think might be the oldest cephalopod shirt in my collection—”I <3 My Giant Squid” by Gama-Go. I don’t actually remember when I got it, but the tag says 2003, and this photo was taken in 2005 (at Dragon*Con, not that that’s important). I know this was only four years ago, but I can’t get over how young (and skinny) I look in this photo!

The shirt was designed by Tim Biskup, and similar squids have appeared on various Gama-Go products over the years (all of which will make an appearance here sooner or later). Everything Gama-Go makes is a limited edition, and they switch out their product line every season. Once it’s gone, it’s gone, so, sadly, this shirt is no longer available.
