T-shirt Tuesday: Hot Molluscs in Love

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Here are three delightful t-shirt designs by Hannah Moore via Kickstarter.com. They are named, respectively, “Secret Snail,” “Forbidden Love,” and “Inky Hearts.”

I would love to give you a link so you could buy them all right now, but there’s a catch—in order for these shirts to become a purchasable reality, a target funding goal needs to be met…and you can help make this happen!

The goal is to get at least $600 pledged by 2:59 am EDT on Monday, August 16. This amount covers the expense of getting a minimum order of each design printed and shipped. If that goal is met, all those that pledged will be rewarded for their generosity. Want a shirt? Pledge at least $20. Want all three shirts? Pledge $50. Basically, the more you give, the more cool stuff you get in return!

T-shirt Tuesday (Birthday Edition!): “Subway Squid” from ThinkGeek

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Yesterday was my birthday, and my brother-in-law Jeff got me this awesome shirt. I wore it to watch Inception, which is neither here nor there, but damn that was a cool movie.

Now, I know what you’re probably thinking…didn’t I already do a post about “Subway Squid?” Yes, yes I did.

However, this particular shirt was purchased from ThinkGeek, the online emporium of artifacts recovered from the cultural intersection of Hip and Nerdy. “Subway Squid” is their first piece of Gama-Go merch, and it comes in Black for $27.99 ($28.99 for XXL). Incidentally, it appears that this shirt is no longer available directly from Gama-Go.

Buy it now from ThinkGeek!

T-shirt Tuesday: “Prairie Squid” from TeeFury

Is there any kind of vehicle or animal that doesn’t look better with a giant squid wrapped around it? I’m pretty sure the answer is “NO.”

Sadly, this shirt is not for sale anymore…unless you have a time machine that can take you back to 2/15/2009. TeeFury.com sells a new shirt every day for the low, low price of $9…FOR ONE DAY ONLY. (The site’s tag line is “Tee today, gone tomorrow.”) This is similar to the Shirt.Woot! model, although Woot generally makes old designs available again for a slightly increased price.

If anyone out there has this shirt and would like to submit a photo of yourself or a willing vicitim wearing it, please send said photo via electronic mail to indiesquidkid@gmail.com. For that matter, if anyone out there has anything cephalopod related they’d like to see featured on the blog, send me a photo, and I’ll see what I can do. (I have an in with the editor.)

Happy Fourth of July!

Today we took Kid Indie Squid Kid to (and participated in) his first Independence Day parade.

Fun was had! Flags were waved! Fire trucks were seen! Dogs were pointed at!

T-shirt Tuesday: mystery octopus hoodie sighting

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

One of my current guilty pleasures is the History Channel reality show Pawn Stars. I was pretty sure I hated it, and then suddenly I found myself kind of addicted. The show focuses on the employees and clientele of the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, a family-owned business in Las Vegas, NV. It is a lot like Antiques Roadshow, only with more swearing and tattoos. I try not to dwell on the depressing probability that most of the people bringing their valuable antiques and family heirlooms to sell are going to turn around and blow it all in a casino.

So anyway, I was watching an episode the other day, and I noticed that one of the shop’s potential customers (he was trying to sell a dome off of a WWII bomber that was used for celestial navigation) was wearing a black hoodie with an interesting octopus design. As you can see from the photo above, the arms of this octopus spell out the word “SOUL.” I’ve tried to find this sweatshirt online, but so far I haven’t had any luck. If anyone out there knows who makes this and/or where it can be purchased, I’d love to post that info here.

T-shirt Tuesday (Plush Week Edition): “Octopus” from Threadless®

I can’t decide if this shirt shows an octopus that loves his teddy bear, or one that just ate a child. (Although, I suppose there’s no reason it can’t be both.) At any rate, I tend to favor the sweet interpretation over the sinister.

This is actually a shirt that I own, but don’t have a good photo of myself wearing it (as is my custom for T-shirt Tuesday). Not yet anyway. I would have taken one today, but being sick for three days in a row isn’t particularly conducive to ones’ photogenic-ness.

“Octopus” is currently Sold Out in all sizes at Threadless, but I have a feeling they’ll reprint it eventually. Here’s the detail link so you can buy it when they do!

This design is also available as a Blik wall decal!

Sightings: Tentacles at Target, Father’s Day Edition

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

I’ve got a big day planned with Ryn and Kid Indie Squid Kid (brunch and then the NC Museum of Life + Science), but if I get a chance, I’ll try to post some sort of follow up to this photo. I can’t believe it’s been a year already!

So, pending that, here are two new Target sightings…

T-shirt Tuesday: “My other shirt is a giant squid” by…ME!!!

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

I designed this shirt a few years back on Spreadshirt.com. By “designed” I, of course, mean “selected a font,” but since I’m not an artist, this is about a good as it gets. (I also took this picture of myself earlier today, and this was, sadly, the best one of the bunch.)

I don’t know if this shirt is Meta, Ironic, Ironically Meta, or Funny Because It’s True. (Or maybe it’s just really Dumb, but that’s OK, I still find it amusing.)

“My other shirt…” is one of several such “designs” for sale in the Random Signal Spreadshirt store, which I set up so that I could offer some merchandise related to my podcast. There you can get this and other shirts emblazoned with marginally witty pseudo-memes such as “Go Eagle Go!” and “Totally Airwolf.”

Incidentally, the Random Signal podcast is five years old this month! I posted a brand new episode last night, and it includes new music by Merge Records artists Let’s Wrestle and Telekinesis, a song about cyborgs by Jonathan Coltoun, and a song about vampires by The Magnetic Fields. The talky bits include discussion of the HBO series True Blood, MRIs, Kraken Rum, and a special message to British Petrolium. Download the show, and if you like what you hear, you can subscribe on iTunes. It’s free!

Today’s shirt is avaialable in Giant Squid Red for $17.50. The back reads “www.randomsignal.com”. Buy it from Spreadshirt.com (I might even make a little bit of money from it!)

T-shirt Tuesday: “Octopus on a Bike” by Dark Cycle Clothing

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Dark Cycle Clothing is a husband and wife team from Tampa, Florida. Their Etsy shop is bursting with whimsical designs, mostly involving various animals riding bicycles. These include, but are not limited to: sharks, whales, Tyrannosauruses, giraffes, foxes, and, of course, octopuses.

All shirts are American Apparel super soft tees and are available in a wide range of sizes (from XS to XL) for $18.00 each.

The image above links to the Brown version of the shirt, but it is also availalble in Eggplant and Slate Grey. (If any of the links take you to sold out items, just go to the main page for the shop. There will be many others to choose from!)

They also have a design called “Octopus Corporate Man Explosion”…but I’ll save that for another time.
